The 7 C’s of Competent Counselors provide a Christ-centered foundation for those who desire to counsel with wisdom, compassion, and integrity rooted in God’s Word.
#1. Christ Centered- Every aspect of counseling points to Jesus Christ as the ultimate source of healing, hope, and transformation.
For from him and through him and to him are all things. Romans 11:36
#2. Care- Sincere care, offering empathy and compassion that reflect Christ’s love while walking patiently with others toward healing and growth.
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
#3. Competent- Biblical counselors must be equipped both spiritually and practically, grounded in Scripture and using sound counseling methods. They also need to be able to discern when a clients’ need exceeds their ability and refer them to get the appropriate qualified help.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
#4. Confidential- Trust is essential. A competent counselor protects privacy, sharing information only when ethically necessary (such as to protect life).
A prudent man concealeth knowledge. Proverbs 12:23
#5. Committed- steadfast, committed to their counselees, to lifelong learning, and to God’s redemptive process.
Let us not grow weary of doing good. Galatians 6:9
#6. Courageous- Biblical counseling often requires courage – to offer hope, speak truth, or walk with someone through deep pain with a strong faith in God.
Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Joshua 1:9
#7. Curious- Approaching each person with genuine curiosity, seeking to understand their story, struggles, and faith journey before offering guidance or solutions.
Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak James 1:19
When counselors embody these seven qualities, they not only guide others toward healing and growth but also reflect the heart of Christ—the true Counselor and source of all transformation.
