When considering counseling, one of the first questions many people ask is whether to meet with a licensed or unlicensed counselor. Both can offer meaningful help and guidance—the best choice depends on your needs, preferences, and spiritual priorities.
Licensed counselors – such as Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) or Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs)—are regulated by their state boards. This oversight ensures certain levels of education, training, and ethical accountability. Licensed professionals can also diagnose mental health conditions. However, a professional license does not always guarantee exceptional skill, nor does it ensure a Christian perspective. While some licensed counselors integrate faith into their work, many practice from a more secular approach.
Unlicensed counselors, including those in faith-based settings, can vary in background and experience. Some bring years of study, ministry, and training, while others may have less formal preparation. Because unlicensed counselors are not state-regulated, it is important to ask thoughtful questions about their education, experience, and how they incorporate biblical truth and Christian principles into their counseling. Unlicensed counselors should not diagnose mental health conditions.
All counselors, licensed or unlicensed, must be practically equipped to listen and use sound counseling methods, while discerning when a person’s needs exceed their training and refer them to the appropriate qualified help.
At We Listen and Care, we are not licensed counselors, but we are deeply committed to professional growth and excellence in Christian counseling. We actively pursue ongoing education, mentorship, and advanced training to strengthen our ability to serve clients well. We are also members of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), which supports ethical practice, continuing education, and integration of faith with sound counseling principles. Our goal is to combine biblical truth with practical tools to help individuals and couples experience healing and transformation.
It is also helpful to know that only licensed counselors can accept insurance. Faith-based or unlicensed counselors typically operate on a private-pay basis, which often allows for greater flexibility and a more personalized, spiritually guided approach.
At We Listen and Care, our focus is on creating a safe, compassionate space where you can grow emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. Whether you choose a licensed professional or a trusted Christian counselor, the most important factor is finding someone who is competent, caring, and aligned with your values—someone who will walk with you toward healing and lasting hope in Christ.
